How to Choose a Safe Plant Medicine Retreat: 12 Questions

By Susan Ross · Founder, Pura Vida Collective

The number of plant medicine and psychedelic retreats has grown faster than the standards around them. Some are extraordinary. Some are careless. From the outside, with beautiful photos and glowing reviews, they can look exactly the same.

The medicine is only part of the work. The container around it matters just as much, sometimes more. These are the questions I would ask before trusting any retreat with my body, my nervous system or someone I love, whether you come to us or go anywhere else.

Before you arrive

1. How will you screen me? A safe retreat asks about your physical and mental health history, heart health, and every medication and supplement you take, before anything is decided. Some medicines interact dangerously with common antidepressants and other drugs, and some are not right for people with certain heart or psychiatric conditions. If screening is a quick online form and nobody follows up, walk away.

2. Is my medicine chosen for me, or am I choosing from a menu? The right medicine depends on your history, intentions and readiness. Be cautious of retreats where everyone receives the same medicines on the same schedule, regardless of who they are.

3. Can I say no? You should be able to decline any ceremony, any dose and any practice, at any point, without pressure. Ask how that is honored in practice.

4. How do you prepare me? Good work begins weeks before arrival: conversations about intention, practical guidance on diet and medications, and a clear picture of what to expect.

The container

5. How many people are in the circle, and how many facilitators? Intimacy matters. A circle of eight to ten can offer a very different level of individual attention from a room of forty. Ask for the actual guest-to-facilitator ratio, not just the total team size.

6. Who holds the space, and how were they trained? Ask about each facilitator’s training, relevant lineage or mentorship where applicable, years of experience, scope of practice, and whether they continue their own supervision, education or inner work.

7. What happens in a medical emergency? Ask who on the team has medical or first-aid training, what emergency equipment and protocols are in place, how transport is handled, and where you would be taken if higher-level care were needed.

8. Are facilitators sober while holding ceremony? The answer should be yes.

9. Is the approach actually trauma-informed? Ask what that means in practice. The answer should include consent before touch, respect for your nervous system and boundaries, clear ways to opt out, and no glorification of being pushed past your threshold.

Honesty

10. Are they clear about the law? Plant medicine laws differ by country and by medicine. A trustworthy retreat speaks about legality openly and never dismisses the question.

11. Are they honest about risks? Every real medicine has risks. A retreat that promises only bliss, or claims a medicine cures specific illnesses, is telling you something important about how it will handle your safety.

After you leave

12. What happens when I go home? This may matter most of all. A profound experience and a changed life are not the same thing. Integration is how an insight in ceremony begins to show up on an ordinary Tuesday. Ask how long support continues, what form it takes, who provides it, and what happens if something difficult emerges after you leave.

How we answer these at REVIVE

Every guest completes medical and psychological screening before any medicine is considered. Their transformative path is individually curated with them in private consultation, never chosen from a menu. Our circles are intentionally small, with group size determined by the retreat. Our team includes RN medical support, and ceremonies are held by experienced facilitators within a trauma-informed, consent-led framework. Every threshold is theirs to cross or decline. We are explicit about risk, legality and scope, and guided integration carries the work home.

You deserve to ask for that level of care wherever you choose to go.
